High Frequencies (Radio Frequency) EMF sources are very common today. In this category falls all electronic communication equipment that has a radio wave, cellular, Bluetooth, WIFI or other, communication technology This includes mobile phones, mobile phone masts, microwave ovens, wifi routers, wifi laptops, cordless phones, RF transmitters, Smart Electric/Gas/water meters Smart TV, Smart house wireless components, “Internet of things” components, “Smart City” components, military equipment, radar and many more devices and sources.
The higher the frequency is, the longer(in distance) the radiation (of a certain power level) beam can travel in the air (a 1W RMS 8MHz beam, will travel less distance, with more errors than a 1 W RMS 5GHz beam). But on the other hand, it is easier to block the higher frequencies of the RF radiation spectrum with common and affordable protection and blocking materials. For example, a mobile phone mast antenna (usually 800MHz to 2.1GHz) can radiate for several kilometers and a simple see-through window cover will block it from penetrating your window (while most of the signal will be lost while penetrating a blocked or concrete wall).
There is RF all around us? what can we do?
Yes, it is true, there is RF all around us, but the levels are not the same everywhere. It is nearly impossible to end the exposure altogether, but it is possible to reduce it a lot. The exposure of a person is depended on the numer of cellular and wireless devices he/she uses and has around him/her, and the distance between him and the sources. For example in my house, there are no RF emitting devices right now. If I would start using RF emitting devices (smartphones, WIFI routers, WIFI equipment) the RF levels in my house will go up. On the other hand, if you currently have RF emitting devices in your house, the RF levels you are exposed to will go down every time you turn off an RF emitting device, or stop using it. AS an example, my nihbors have a lot of RF emitting devices in their house, so their exposure to RF radiation is much higher than mine, even if we enjoy the same low RF neighborhood.
Safety Distances from High-Frequency Radiation sources
Safety distance from home use wireless depends on the level of RF radiation you are whiling to expose yourself to. You need to determine your attitude to the so-called “safety standards” and to my recommendations, and then set a level you don’t want to exceed. EHS people should try and reduce exposure entirely and need to act in order to reach very low exposure levels of RF, if possible not to be exposed at all.
I think that there is no safety distance from a wireless device. This is because of the effective range of most home and office wireless equipment (800 to 6000 MHz, 0.01W RMS to several watts) is between 10 to several hundred meters, and where there is a reception there is radiation.
For example, a 0.1W RMS WIFI router that emits RF radiation in 2.4GHz may reach 400 meters in open terrain, and 50 meters in built areas. We would be able to measure it for about 10 meters from the source (using a fast EMF meter), so what are the safety distances we can expect if we use this device in the house? I think it will cover my all house, so there is no safety distance. If you do choose to use these devices, now that you are exposed to RF, and of course, putting it 5 meters away from you is better than 1 meter away.
From the moment you entered a wireless device to your house, for example, a cordless phone or wireless WIFI router, all the houses will have reception. This means the radiation from the source will travel through all the houses. However, it is true that next to the device there will be more RF radiation than few meters away from it, and that if you enter another device, the radiation level, both on the time and frequency scales, will increase, even if most EMF meter will show no big change in the RF (because of measurement limitations).
In order to still allow you to reduce exposure, my guidelines is to identify the source, understand how to reduce the RF exposure from it (over time, in level, and over frequency) , for example, turn it ON only for part of the day, or replace it with a wired device that do not emit any RF.
Regarding RF radiation sources outside the house, usually, their range is several Kilometers so there is no safety distance as well. The basic role is that if you can see the source, you are exposed.
In general, I think that wireless and cellular devices should not be used in a house or an office.
In both cases (internal and external RF source), an EMF radiation meter can help you assess the exposure and to reduce it.
In the following table, we will not name safety distances from wireless and cellular devices but we will try to give some technical details about them and the exposure from them.

Outdoor radio/radar/communication infrastructure
Around the world there are many outdoor radio/radar/communication infrastructure that emits high frequency RF radiation. They are usually not near or in houses, but since they travel far, they can influence people.
