A New Name for the 21st Century Illness, Electromagnetic Radiation Syndrome(EMR-S) will take the place of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity(EHS).
In a recent press release, aired this week (February 2025), a new name has been announced for the illness previously known as “Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS)” and other terms. The new name, chosen by a global group of activists and scientists involved in the “One Name Project,” is “Electromagnetic Radiation Syndrome” or “EMR-S” for short.
This decision comes after years of using various names for the condition, some of which placed blame on the patient (victim blaming) and others that aimed to obscure the link to non-ionizing radiation exposure. The new, unified name more accurately reflects the condition, in which people react to exposure to non-ionizing radiation with a variety of symptoms, ranging from headaches to irregular heartbeat, sleep disturbances, tingling, dizziness, chronic fatigue, memory impairment, neurological effects, and even damage to the immune system.

- This was the most widely used and longest-standing name.
- However, it also carries some victim blaming, implying that the person is “hypersensitive” or different.
- Electromagnetic Sensitivity (ES)
- In Hebrew: “רגישות לשדות אלקטרומגנטיים”
- This name was often used by the UK charity for radiation victims ( https://www.es-uk.info/ )
- Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance Attributed to Electromagnetic Fields (IEI-EMF)
- In Hebrew: “אי סבילות סביבתית (שהסיבה לה לא ידועה) לשדות אלקטרומגנטיים”
- This name is considered the most offensive, as it was assigned by groups and scientists who deny the harmful effects of non-ionizing radiation and sensitivity to it.
- It aims to further obscure the link to radiation and emphasize that the cause of sensitivity is unknown.
- This name is often used by the WHO EMF Project, ICNIRP, industry-influenced bodies, and those who deny harm and sensitivity.
